In home care educators provide education and care for children in their family home. They are self-employed professionals who support families that work nonstandard hours, are geographically isolated or have challenging or complex family needs.

Wanslea provides resources and guidance to ensure you feel safe, supported and prepared for your role. We provide:
- A facilitator to guide you through the recruitment process
- Ongoing training and development
- Resources and guidance to prepare you for working in a family environment, particularly with families experiencing complex situations
- Home inspections to ensure the physical environment is safe for the children receiving care and for you
- Regular support visits and monitoring of the quality of care are provided

If your application is approved, you will be contacted to arrange orientation training and registration with Wanslea.
At a minimum, you’ll need to have a Certificate III in Children Services or Child Care, an equivalent qualification, or be enrolled and working towards a qualification. You can check if your qualification is eligible to work as an in home care educator on the ACEQA website.
The hours you work as an in home educator are flexible and will depend on the family you are caring for. Families may require care during regular working hours, on weekends or overnight, depending on their situation.
As an in home care educator, you will be paid by the hour for the care you provide. You set the fees per family, based on your qualifications and the service you offer. You can care for up to five children from the same family. Educators pay a weekly fee to be registered with Wanslea.
Families pay the educator directly for their Education and Care costs, minus the Child Care Subsidy amount. The Department of Human Services pays Wanslea the Child Care Subsidy that we forward to the educator each week.
On average, the recruitment process takes two weeks, depending on how quickly Wanslea receives your documents.
Most of the costs of setting up your business are tax-deductible. Here is a list of the things you need to become an in home care educator:
- First Aid Certificate (004 Certificate)
- National Police Certificate, no more than six months old
- Public Liability Insurance from an approved Australian provider
- Medical Clearance by your general practitioner
- NT educators, you’ll need a Working With Children Clearance (from the Government of Northern Territory)
- WA educators, you’ll need a Working with Children Check (from the Government of Western Australia)
- TAS educators, you’ll need a Working With Vulnerable People Check (from the Government of Tasmania)
